Samsung Galaxy Mostly the Same; Wraith’s Contract Up in Air

December 2, 2016 - News

When you reach the Finals of a League of Legends World Championship, it’s a pretty good sign that you’re doing at least something right. A famous proverbs says that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Despite underperforming a little bit in the LCK, Samsung Galaxy managed to make it into the Finals of Worlds and bring SKT to five games. Granted, they had an easier time of it than SKT or ROX Tigers, but still.

In the action-packed preseason, Samsung Galaxy seem to be set on keep at least four of their five players who placed 2nd in Worlds 2016. So far, Lee “CuVee” Seong-jin, Kang “Ambition” Chan-yong, Kee “Crown” Min-ho, and Par “Ruler” Jae-hyuk renewed their contracts with the organisations, with only their support’s, Kwon “Wraith” Ji-min’s contract remaining up in the air. Curiously, Cho "Mata" Se-hyeong is still a free agent. Could this be the reason for their Support to be treated differently than the rest of the roster?

Over the last season, SSG wasn’t one of those Korean teams, which are known for absolutely crushing their opponents in the early game. Actually, even in the games Samsung wins, they often fall behind in the early game and have to claw their way back into the game with superior macro play. While their players are counted among some of the best in Korea, you can easily name someone better for each role. With the power plays made by SK Telecom and KT Rolster in the preseason, it’s extremely likely that Samsung Galaxy will have an even harder time of placing highly in the 2017 season.

If you were Mata, would you place yourself into such a roster when your ultimate goal is to become a World Champion? Probably not, especially when the other option is KT Rolster, where Song “Smeb” Kyung-ho is in Top Lane, Go “Score” Dong-bin is jungling, Heo “PawN” Won-seok is in the Middle Lane, and last but definitely not least, Kim “Deft” Hyuk-kyu is playing AD Carry. If the world and KT Rolster managers act within rhyme or reason Mata definitely has an offer from them. Why would he ever pass the chance to join such a scary roster?

While Samsung might be angling to get Mata to play for them, it’s unlikely that they will be able to convince him, not when other orgs have noticeably stronger rosters and no Support. With that in mind, Samsung is better off just renewing their contract with Wraith and happily competing in the LCK, trying to get the third Worlds spot. Even if they manage that, it’s extremely unlikely that they will be able to repeat their great result from the 2016 season, however, by signing their old squad, Samsung is signaling that they aren’t really interested in that at all.
