Paris Saint-Germain Reported to Have 20 Million Euros Budget by French TV; Doesn’t Make Sense

October 25, 2016 - News

If you’ve missed it, there’s been some more developments on the mainstream invasion front, when French football club, Paris Saint-Germain, bought the EU Challenger spot of the failed Team HUMA. Then, following the announcement of Bora “YellOwStaR” Kim’s retirement from playing League of Legends, Bora Kim was introduced as the head of PSG’s eSports division. It’s not totally clear what he’s going to do exactly, however, we won’t see him playing or coaching. Now that you’re caught up, let’s talk about the new developments in the story.

First, a French broadcaster, TV5 MONDE, reported that 20 million Euros have been invested into Paris Saint-Germain’s eSports department. Now, ignoring any official response from PSG, that is extremely unlikely, unless the org is planning massive expansion into every eSport imaginable. That is especially true when you consider that so far, PSG only seems to have an interest in League of Legends and, of course, FIFA. Why is that so? PSG only bought a Challenger Series spot. With 20 million, they could probably buy some of the best players in the world. Making them play in Challenger would be a total waste of that money. That is why the reported figure seems ridiculous. If Paris Saint-Germain were prepared to fork out 20 million, they would NOT have started with EU CS, they would have went straight for the LCS.

As it turns out, a recent AMA carried out on Reddit, confirmed our reasoning on the 20 mil figure. When Reddit user obscurica asked if there was a miscommunication with the TV5 MONDE broadcaster concerning the sum, PSG’s Head of Social Media responded, “20 million euros? We wouldn’t want to run all the EU LCS teams. 🙂 We never gave any number to anyone, but well this is far, far away from the truth. We have a pretty decent budget for an European League of Legends team, but we are as for now here to learn. Our main goal is to qualify for LCS.” Hopefully, that puts the ridiculous rumor to rest.

The rest of the AMA discussed various topics, like the org’s plans for the future, their dedication to eSports as one of the branches of their org, as well as Bora Kim’s role in his capacity as Head of eSports. If you’re interested in the approach and way of thinking taken by mainstream sports organizations concerning their entrance into eSports, we strongly recommend reading the whole AMA yourself. It can be accessed by clicking here, if you can’t be bothered to look for it on /r/leagueoflegends yourself.
