In games like CS:GO and Dota 2, there are no centralized locations where tournaments take place. As a result, different cities and countries routinely have some of the best esports competitors in the world coming to compete for a weekend. In some rare cases, more than one title has big events at the same time and in the same venue.
This weekend, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2 teams will come to Jönköping, Sweden. The FPS players will compete for a prize of $100,000 at DreamHack Winter 2017, while some of the best Dota 2 teams in the world will converge on the same venue, Elmia Convention Center, to fight in the ROG DreamLeague Season 8 Major event, offering $1,000,000 in prizes.
Eight teams will play at the DreamHack Winter 2017 event. The strongest of them will be Gambit Esports, mousesports, Natus Vincere, and Team EnVyUs in no particular order. BIG, Heroic, North Academy, and Rise Nation will try and challenge the established teams for the title.
The event will follow a Double Elimination GSL format. The eight teams will be separated into two groups of four, with Gambit, Heroic, Na’Vi, and Rise Nation in Group A and mouz, BIG, Team EnVyUs, and North Academy in Group B.
In Group A, action will start off with two initial best of 1s: Gambit vs. Rise and Heroic vs. Na’Vi. In Group B, the initial matchups will be mouz vs. North Academy and BIG vs. Team EnVyUs.
After the initial matches, the winners will play each other and the winner of that match will qualify for the Semifinals of the event. Meanwhile, the initial match losers will play each other in a bo3 with the loser of this match getting eliminated. After that, the losers of the winners’ match and the winners of the losers’ match will play each other in a bo3, with the winner getting a spot in the Playoffs.
Obviously, Gambit Esports stands the best chance of winning Group A, unless Natus Vincere has suddenly become much better with Denis “electronic” Sharipov, who’s replaced Denis “seized” Kostin. Even with Na’Vi struggling in the past several months, the CIS giants are still likely to make it to the Semifinals at least.
In Group B, things may be a bit more interesting with mousesports, BIG, and Team EnVyUs destined to fight for the two spots in the Playoffs. Normally, mousesports and Team EnVyUs should be the clear favorites to make it all the way to the Semifinals, but we’re not prepared to discount BIG yet, especially with the fall from grace Team EnVyUs experience after the third French Shuffle.
The CS:GO tournament isn’t going to be the most exciting event at the Elmia Convention Center in Jönköping this weekend because of the Dota 2 Major taking place at the same time, in the same venue. The teams participating in the event represent some of the best in Dota.
There will be Team Secret, Natus Vincere, Newbee, Virtus.pro, Evil Geniuses, Fnatic, Team Liquid, and Infamous fighting in a tournament structured to pit the teams against each other over and over again in a Double Elimination Playoffs.
The event will start with the best of 3 Quarterfinals, with these matchups: Virtus.pro vs. Natus Vincere, Team Liquid vs. Fnatic, Team Secret vs. Evil Geniuses, and Newbee vs. Infamous.
The winners of the Quarterfinals will move to the Semis while the losers will go on to the lower bracket where another loss will mean elimination from the tournament.
All in all, the best case scenario is winning the Quarterfinals, the Semifinals, and the High Bracket Finals to make it to the Grand Finals where you would have to face the strongest team from the Lower Bracket, the place where any team goes after losing their first match.
The Lower Bracket is a much harder road. To make it to the Grand Finals after losing in the Quarters, a team would have to get through three Losers’ Rounds and the Losers’ Finals.
Which teams stand the best chance of lifting the trophy in the end? Virtus.pro, Team Secret, Team Liquid, and Newbee are currently ranked the highest out of the teams participating in this event. Comparatively, Evil Geniuses, Fnatic, and Na’Vi are placed significantly lower in the rankings, Infamous trails even farther behind.
