Where Team SoloMid is the top dog in the NA League of Legends Championship Series, the org can’t boast the same in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. At all. While TSM had a world-class CS:GO roster in the past, the players left, eventually establishing their own player-owned organization, Astralis. After that, TSM managed to cobble together a roster, however, it has been struggling to make its mark in the most popular FPS eSport in the world, causing Andy “Reginald” Dinh to make some changes.
In the beginning of January, TSM should have two new players join their ranks, replacing the team’s former AWPer, Kory “Semphis” Friesen and in-game leader Pujan “FNS” Mehta. Replacing them will be two former Echo Fox players, Sean “sgares” Gares and Shahzeb “ShahZam” Kahn. Speaking on the matter, sgares said in the official statement from TSM: “I truly believe that the composition of roles and talent is perfect, and I can’t wait to get back to work!” ShahZaM, on the other hand, said: “Combined with the team’s high skill, strong leadership, and defined roles, I’m confident in our ability to become a top team.”
While it definitely sounds good, the roster change is not without its controversy, as both former Echo Fox players, especially sgares, have been criticized by the community for their poor performance in the server. It’s been said that while sgares is a decent in-game leader, his lack of actual firepower on the server is a real detriment to the play of any team he’s on. Of course, sometimes a decision maker is much better than an aim god who can’t call for the life of him.if a strong shot caller is what TSM needs to get to the next level, sgares could be precisely the person the team needs. ShahZaM, on the other hand, is a player who hasn’t been himself while on Echo Fox, even though he used to be a very good player on some other, stronger teams.
The success of this new TSM roster will depend on whether sgares can implement his plan in the server. If the team buys what he’s selling and somehow manages to show up with enough firepower to carry it out, TSM could actually see an upswing in performance. Also likely is that both players will continue their careers’ downward trajectory, bringing TSM down with them. To be fair, however, it has to be said that TSM were going down way before the two players joined. Before making this roster move, Reginald had nothing to lose and something to gain. Now, we will just have to wait and see how it goes in the end. ShahZaM and sgares could make or break the CS:GO team of Team SoloMid. Let’s hope they make it, shall we?
