The Support Dilemma and Singed Support Controversy

November 15, 2016 - Esports

There are two hot-topics in the League of Legends community at the moment. For once, the both of them have to do with the Support role. First, people are talking about the fact that Riot decided to make most Supports free to play for a month. The other, more interesting matter is that a reddit user who is known for playing Singed Support, claimed that Riot Games are threatening to ban him if he doesn’t stop.

First, let’s talk about the free to play Supports thing. Starting tomorrow in EU, you will be able to play ten new Supports in Normals, in addition to the free champion rotation. Which supports will be available? Blitzcrank, Brand, Braum, Janna, Leona, Nami, Sona, Taric, Thresh, and Zyra. Riot Games are trying to provide players with the opportunity to check out and maybe fall in love with Support-y characters without having to invest 6,300 IP into some of the more expensive ones.

While the whole initiative is nice, the fact of the matter is that this won’t solve the Support problem. People don’t like the role because they think it is boring, not because they can’t afford the champions. That cannot be helped, however. People are glory seekers by nature. Who would want to land OP heals when he could one shot someone on Syndra? Whether you like playing Support or not, however, try the newly free Supports you haven’t played before. Who knows, you might find your new favorite champion. Nobody said that you have to play them as Support, ADC Thresh iz stronk, yo.

Speaking of that… Reddit is bursting with discussion about a Singed one trick pony, who started to play Singed Support. The problem came to the public’s notice when he posted a thread about Riot saying that they will ban him if he continues playing Singed Support. Except that’s not what Riot’s letter said.

You see, this anti-meta rebel decided, that it’s a great idea to queue as Support, get a fast queue, pick Singed and then proceed to leave your AD Carry to 1v2 and go around the map, invading the enemy Jungle and ganking lanes. If this guy decided to play Singed Support, stayed in Bot lane, bought Sighstone and actually tried to help and protect his AD Carry, he would be a weird, but essentially decent guy. Now? Now he’s a guy who ruins the game for 4 other people, all to “provide pressure on the map”.

While not popular, the Support role is one of the most important in the game. When you have a guy who refuses to perform what is implied by the role’s name, despite queueing as Support, it is not okay. It would be fine if he did it with a full group of premades. It would be fine if he asked the team if it was okay for him to pick Singed and then roam for the whole game and they agreed. I recently played a game where we had Ivern Support, ADC Lulu (me), Ziggs Mid, AP Shaco Jungle, and AP Aatrox Top. We talked about it, we agreed to have a funny game. It was fine. What this guy is doing is not fine. He is routinely ruining the game for 4 other people. He should be banned.

/rant over.

There is no problem with weird champion picks. Lux Support can work, Miss Fortune Support worked in Worlds 2016 Semis, Kennen used to be played as Support. Hell, you can even play Kha’Zix Support. But. If you pick a weird champion, you still have to do the job as well as you can. Get a Sighstone, build appropriately. Support your AD Carry. Don’t get me wrong, roaming is fine and should be encouraged. You simply should pick good spots to roam. Roaming is great, abandoning Bot Lane is not.
