RUMOR: Schalke 04 Has a Challenger Series Roster

December 28, 2016 - Esports

According to ESPN’s Jacob Wolf, who’s been doing a great job breaking news about League of Legends roster changes before the official announcement in this preseason, FC Schalke 04 has their roster ready to compete in the EU Challenger Series Spring 2017.

While Schalke 04 ran a scouting grounds of sorts in the Summer, the roster they came up with was not picked up to represent the team in the Challenger Series. Instead, it’s speculated by Jacob Wolf, based on his sources close to the Schalke 04 organization, that the team is going to field Max “Satorius” Günther in Top, Jean-Victor “loulex” Burgevin in the Jungle, Marcin “SELFIE” Wolski as their Mid, Elias “Upset” Lipp as AD Carry, with Oskar “VandeR” Bogdan rounding out the roster as the team’s Support.

The Top Laner, Satorius, is most well-known for playing on Epsilon eSports in the Challenger Series, though he left the team a short while later, allegedly due to the organization failing to pay its players. With not much on his resumé, Satorius is unlikely to be the player the team is built around. More than likely, he’s supposed to be the low maintenance Top, who takes what resources he can get, tries to come out even with his lane opponent and does his job effectively in teamfights.

The team’s alleged Jungler, loulex, is a little bit more interesting. The player started his professional career in July 2014 on Gambit Gaming. Since then, he played for Ninjas in Pyjamas, H2k-Gaming and Unicorns of Love. His longest stints on pro teams were on H2K from November 2014 to November 2015 and UoL from February 2016 to May 2016. With the current strength and importance of the Jungle, it’s good that the guy Schalke 04 signed has at least some LCS experience. Yes, he’s no Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski, however, Schalke 04 isn’t in the LCS anymore either.

The team’s Mid, SELFIE, started his career in January 2014 on MeetYourMakers and SUPA HOT CREW, before moving on to join Echo Fox to play for the Rick Fox-owned org in the NA LCS Spring Split. Following Henrik "Froggen” Hansen getting his visa issues fixed, he was let go from the team and joined Misfits to play in the EU Challenger Series Summer Split, which he won, helping his team qualify for the LCS. Unfortunately, he was replaced by Tristan “PowerOfEvil” Schrage. If Wolf’s sources are correct, SELFIE will have to try and do it again, this time with Schalke. Hopefully, if he succeeds, the team is going to keep him on the roster.

Schalke 04’s Bottom lane of Upset and VandeR looks to be dominated by the European Support star. With a career spanning more than 4 years, VandeR should be able to teach Upset enough so that he could overcome his inexperience in the pro scene and perform up to the standard which is required in order to qualify for the LCS.

Looking at the alleged Schalke 04 roster, it seems like their star power is in the Jungle, Mid Lane, and the Support position. This makes it seem that it’s likely that loulex will focus most of his attention on the Mid Lane and Bot Lane, where VandeR can use his experience to set up perfect ganks, while Upset just mindlessly right clicks stuff in front of him. Poor Satorius, though. There’s a saying in League of Legends, which states that “The Top Lane is an island.” In this case it certainly looks to be totally true.
