After four days of semi-exciting play, the Group Stage of the 2017 League of Legends World Championship Play-In stage is now over. We have already covered what happened in Groups A and B—Team WE and Lyon Gaming made it out of Group A and Group B was escaped from by Cloud9 and Team oNe eSports— but now, it’s time to discuss Groups C and D.
In Group C, Fnatic, Young Generation, and Kaos Latin Gamers met on the Summoner’s Rift. In Day 1, Fnatic flirted with disaster against Young Generation, almost losing the match but somehow managing to come out ahead, earning themselves a 2-0 in the first day. Young Generation were in a bad spot, having lost to Kaos Latin Gamers too. KSG were quite comfortable all things considered with 1-1.
In Day 2, the action started with a match between Kaos Latin Gamers and Young Generation. This time, YG managed to win, potentially setting up a tiebreaker scenario in case where they lost to Fnatic later in the day, which was almost certain. Next Kaos Gaming played and lost against Fnatic, bringing us closer to the all-important match between Fnatic and YG. This time, the wildcard team didn’t try to replicate the cheeky lane crusher strategy from Game 1. That didn’t mean that they stood a bad chance of winning the game. In fact, that’s precisely what they did, closing out the game at 32 minutes and making it to the Round 2 of the Play-In as the second seed from Group C to Fnatic’s 3-1 first seed.
In Group D, 1907 Fenerbahçe, HK Attitude and Rampage were the teams to fight for the two spots in Play-In Round 2. Despite fielding an emergency replacement jungler Lee “Crash” Dong-woo instead of Kang “Move” Ming-su, who wasn’t able to play due to visa issues, they managed to split wins against HK Attitude and 2-0 Rampage, which is also the record HKA achieved, making the two teams play a tiebreaker match, won by 1907 Fenerbahçe, relegating HKA to 2nd place in the Group D standings.
So, the Pool 1 teams were Team WE, Cloud9, Fnatic, and 1907 Fenerbahçe. Pool 2 featured Lyon Gaming, Team oNe eSports, Young Generation, and HK Attitude. In the drawing ceremony for the Round 2 matchups, these matchups were determined:
Team WE vs. Young Generation
Cloud9 vs. Lyon Gaming
Fnatic vs. HK Attitude
1907 Fenerbahçe vs. Team oNe eSports
Unless something goes very wrong, it’s likely that Team WE, C9, Fnatic and Fenerbahçe are going to be the ones qualified for the Group Stage after playing the best of 5 series about their respective #2 seeds. Still, we worry about Fnatic’s chances against HK Attitude in the face of their struggles against Young Generation.
