The first Overwatch tournament with a decent payout is coming like winter in Westeros. Hosted by ESL, this tournament will feature 8 teams in total, four from Europe and four from North America. The prize pool will be conservative by Dota 2 standards, with measly $100,000 being distributed among the competitors, however, it’s still a lot of money in the budding Overwatch eSports scene.
The main event will take place from the 20th to 21st of August, at gamescom, Europe’s largest trade fair for interactive games and entertainment, on the ESL main stage in Hall 9, according to the official announcement on eslgaming.com.
The first of the four open qualifiers will start on the 27th of June. It will be operated by ESL, obviously. You will be able to watch it on ESL Play. Following that, there will be two Regional qualifiers and one more online one, all played out over the Internet and broadcast on ESL Play and their streaming partners’ services. The action will be cast from Monday to Thursday by Jason Kaplan, Mitch “Uber” Leslie, and Leigh “Deman” Smith, who will work live from the ESL Studios in Cologne, Germany.
The group stage of the main event will take place during gamescom, on Saturday, while the playoffs will be held on Sunday. The broadcast staff is yet to be announced, however, it’s promised that the staff will be professional in the official statement.
