EU LCS – After Week 2

January 30, 2017 - Esports

The less exciting little sister of the NA LCS 2017, the EU LCS (through no fault of its own; NA simply has more money for players due to the easier time sponsors have of marketing products with no national borders) has concluded its second week of matches.

Group A

The reigning champions of the EU LCS, G2 Esports are still the mighty giants of the group, with a 3-0 match score, having won 6 out of their 8 games. The have only played one match this week, however, it was against a very strong opponent, Misfits, the team which has qualified for the EU LCS after knocking out Schalke 04 and is doing very well in Group A with a 2-1 match score and 5-3 game score after two weeks of play. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for G2 against Misfits, however. The series started with Misfits winning the first game, mostly on the back of great play by their Mid Laner, Tristan “PowerOfEvil” Schrage. Despite the rocky start, G2 managed to recover and win the series when their Mid lane got POE under control.

Misfits, on the other hand, played one more game this week, the other being against ROCCAT. Obviously, that’s nowhere near the strongest teams in the EU LCS. Is it any wonder that they won 2-0? No, Not really. So far, Misfits are proving to be capable of fighting the best teams in Europe while not losing to the weak ones, avoiding the TSM syndrome. Of course, it’s only been two weeks and three matches, it might all change, there are eight weeks left to be played, after all.

Group B

The standings in Group B are a little bit weird. While one would expect to see H2k-Gaming towards the top and be vindicated, he would also be surprised by the fact that they are not in the first place but second, with a 2-1 match score and a 5-2 game score. In first place, there are the Unicorns of Love with a 3-0 match score, having lost only one game.

Granted, teh 3-0 by UoL is impressive, however, their first match of the week was against Origen. With all due respect to Origen’s owner, that team is a joke. We would honestly be surprised if they managed to win a series against a top team. Is there any wonder that Unicorns of Love won their series against Origen 2-0? No, not really. Their second match of the week, however, was against a much stronger opponent, H2k-Gaming. Even though UoL managed to win the series, it took them three games despite a good start in Game 1. As for H2k-Gaming themselves, they had a reasonably easy time this week, only having to play the one match against UoL. As a downside, lost and didn’t even get to make themselves feel better by smashing someone weaker than them either.
