While Cloud9 is present at the top of three of the biggest esports in the world—League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Overwatch—they have been stutter stepping in Dota 2. The history of C9 in Dota 2 is peppered with the org picking up a roster, disbanding it and trying it out again some time later. It seems like one more chapter in the love story between C9 and Dota 2 is coming to an end.
On Jul. 20, Cloud9 picked up the roster of Team NP, Jacky “EternalEnvy” Mao, Adrian “FATA-“ Trinks, Arif “MSS” Anwar, Kurtis “Aui-2000” Ling and Johan “pieliedie” Åström after the team qualified to The International 2017.
In the quasi World Championship of Dota 2, the new Cloud9 team won six of their 16 Group B matches, defeating Digital Chaos 2-0, going 1-1 against Execration, 2-0ing HellRaisers and getting a 1-1 tie against Virtus.pro. Seeded into the Lower Bracket, they had to win against Team Empire to move on in the tournament. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful and had to leave the tournament.
Recently, the Dota 2 team has been taken out of the Cloud9 website. A dotesports.com article states that the roster is going to be disbanded soon, citing sources close to the organization. According to the same article on dot, it’s possible that C9’s captain EternalEnvy is planning to play with pieliedie, Steve “Xcalibur” Ye, Djardel Jicko “DJ” Mampusti and Chong “Ohaiyo” Xin Khoo. The source for this rumor is Adam "343" Shah, who's close to DJ and Ohaiyo.
