One of the most exciting moments in IEM Katowice 2017 came when Heroic, an underdog team expected to promptly get knocked out of the tournament. That’s not what happened to say the least. Instead, Heroic finished the Group Stage in 1st place in Group B and moved straight to the Semifinals, losing 0-2 to Astralis.
Can they repeat in IEM Katowice 2018?
The short answer is… probably not.
The long version is that Heroic’s roster hasn’t really changed since their upset at Katowice 2017. They also haven’t really shot up in their performance either. Meanwhile, the teams they are going to face in this year’s event have become much stronger in some cases.
Heroic’s performance in StarLadder & i-League StarSeries Season 4 doesn’t promise an upset at Katowice either. At the time we’re writing this article, Heroic has played two matches in the event, losing 0-2 to the reigning Valve Major Champion Cloud9 and winning 2-0 against HellRaisers. Their next opponent is TyLoo. Depending on when you’re reading this, this match might be over.
Even though TyLoo upset Fnatic, Heroic can still win against them but it remains to be seen what happens on the server. It might be the fact that we aren’t very optimistic where Asian CS:GO teams are concerned but we do expect that Heroic will win.
It’s just hard to imagine them comparing favorably to FaZe Clan, SK Gaming, Astralis or many of the other top teams they will face at IEM Katowice 2018.
What a superb story it would make if they did, however…
While we don’t expect at all that it will happen, we wouldn’t be unhappy at all if Heroic did well.
